Degree Project

My degree project is an immersive exploration of color and light, based on my observation of the shifting times of day. Thinking about my time in studio of leaving during the morning and coming back when the sun sets. Seeing these very subtle shifts in color everyday I come back home from a long day. Weaving each of the samples created this routine and monotony when building in increments creating a bigger expanse.

I am also thinking about the relationship between industrial and traditional methods of making. Thinking about my jacquard class, it was interesting to have the ability to program a fabric to achieve a desired visual effect. But, even within this technological approach to weaving, the human touch remained integral to the process. Sketching, experimenting with various materials, and physically engaging with the fabric provided a connection to traditional craftsmanship. Through the act of weaving and braiding by hand, I’m having these materials go back to traditional ways of making, where the human presence take center stage. This convergence of industrial and traditional techniques within my artwork serves as a bridge, highlighting the human touch and labor in the creative process.

My other piece, dusk, creates a subtle experience through the 2 layers of organza fabric interacting with each other. This dynamic interplay of hue and saturation, transparency and layers created my own color grid in both my pieces, where it captures the essence of time and light.
